It is often difficult sometimes to keep up with it all, whether it is forum posts or other blog posts.

With regard to other blog posts I have solved the problem by using the RSS Feeds on their blogs (see my previous post “What is RSS?”).

However there is a slight problem with that as a number of blogs (some very active) have not yet set up the RSS Feed for that blog.

For those that are not quite sure what to do I have created a small tutorial below which will show you how to set up your RSS feeds for WordPress, Blogger and Typepad blogs.

I will show you using Feedburner, now known as  Google Feedburner, as this has extra functionality of offering you the following:

  • detailed statistics and subscriber count
  • the option to set up email subscriptions for those that wish to receive blog feeds to email
  • you can add social bookmarking option

1.Set up the Feedburner account

Go to www.feedburner.com and sign in if you have a Google Account or register if not.

When you sign in you will be taken to MyFeeds page

Enter your original feed address URL into the textbox.

What is this?

If you hover over your RSS feed logo in your blog you will see : http://yourblog/?feed=rss2 or http://yourblog/feed/.

This is what you enter in the box.

Then click Next

You will then see the screen below:

Give your feed a title in the Feed Title text box, this can be any title that you want in the first text box, for example anythingthen enter:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/anything in the Feed Address text box.

Now press Activate Feed or Next.

You will then see the screen below. Make note of your new Feedburner URL (http://feeds.feedburner.com/…….. )

You can now choose to add additional options but at this point I would suggest you skip  to feed managment and test your RSS Feed.

When you Skip directly to Feed Management you will see the screen below:

Here if you click on Self Hosted WordPress you will be invited to download the plug-in Feedburner Feedsmith.

You may already have this installed but if not download it, follow the instructions to upload using FTP, the same procedure as any other plug-ins that you have uploaded.

Test all this and you should now have an active RSS Feed.

Good Luck!

You can find overall information about RSS at Feed 101.
