This is a recommendation to a  report by the well-known marketer, John Thornhill.

The report is hard-hitting and straight to the point, so much so that a few people may be upset at reading  some home truths!

I think it is an excellent article and more to the point a wake-up call for many of us.

However, if the title of the post is a problem for you here is an excerpt from the first page, with my underlining:

Wow! Did John just say that, is it true? Holy crap John, aren’t you supposed to tell me how to succeed online and become a success? Yet here you are telling me I?m doomed to fail, what?s that all about?
First of all it?s not all doom and gloom, but you have to understand that most people who try to make money online will fail, and not only that will probably have spent thousands of dollars on various programs in their quest for success.
In this report I am going to tell you what I believe are the main reasons people fail online and I?m going to give it to you straight, you may not like some of what you read but that?s the whole point.

I want you to get angry as you read. Hopefully this will help you avoid these pitfalls that most people face and hopefully you will learn what it takes to succeed online. So without further delay let’s get on with it

John has been around for a few years now and like many other internet marketers has come from a modest background but more to the point has succeeded through HARD WORK!

Apart from successful internet marketing, John Thornhill mentors clients, and does it in such a way as to turn newbies into internet marketers complete with their own product online.

Many of his students do go on on to be successful marketers themselves, as by the time they have finished with his mentoring, they have the knowledge and confidence to create their own blogs, their own products, take on affiliates – and so on, and basically function as  internet marketers.

I am creating this post, which has absolutely nothing to do with internet marketing, as a lesson in life which applies to anyone who cares to take it on board… and that includes me.

Read on … and inwardly digest :o . I think there is much to think about here – and enjoy.

“To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me.
It is the most-requested column I’ve ever written.”
My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree
7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.
12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you, and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26 Frame every so-called disaster with these words ‘In five years, will this matter?’
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative –dying young.
37 Your children get only one childhood.
38 All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s,we’d grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43 No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.”

Its estimated 93% won’t forward this. If you are one of the 7% who will, forward this with the title ’7%.’ I’m in the 7%. Remember that I will always share my spoon with you!
Friends are the family that we choose for ourselves!

Its been a tough month all round and unfortunately internet marketing took very much a back seat!

As with many people, we are in the depths of winter, and for my wife and I, that means lots of snow and temperatures well below zero.

We chose to move house a couple of weeks ago just to add a little bit of spice to things.

How crazy is that?

We moved, computer carefully moved by hand and put gently into its new position.

My payback for all this loving care was first my Windows boot-up going into a continuous loop despite all my efforts to fix it.

Long story short, I had to restore Windows thereby wiping the hard disk.

How sad is that?

Unhappy, but I was still quite confident as I had most of my files backed up to an external hard disk and to online computer backup.

Backup online is very extensive and has, in my case,  been backing up for a long time. It also takes a long time to restore if you want to restore all your files.

Anyway, this was steadily restoring when the hard disk failed completely! I have to say that my wife said the computer was very noisy but I suppose if you are living with it you probably don’t take too much notice.

So, what to do now – new computer, take computer to a local repair shop or replace the hard disk?
Having already lost a lot of time from an internet marketing point of view I decided to replace the hard disk myself  so I did visit the local computer shop but only to buy a hard disk.

I managed to replace the hard disk myself (thank you Youtube), which was indeed a new experience, and all went well. Back to square one and starting backup all over again.

What is the point of this post you may be asking.
The point is to ask you “When was the last time you backed up the important files on your computer?”

Was this some time ago when you heard something similar to this story?

It is a fact of life that hard disks will fail.

My recent research showed that hard drives will fail anytime after 4 – 6 years. My hard disk was just about 4 years old.
It is not a case of maybe but more a case of when your hard drive will fail. Of course, a particularly nasty virus could also cause hard disk failure at any time.

I have had the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) on two separate computers in the past and I learned the lessons the hard way.
It set me back months!

As I mentioned earlier, I have an external hard disk, which I can access very quickly, and I backup online also.

The purpose of this post is to say to you “Don’t think this could never happen to me”. It will, and it hurts!
If you are running an online business, hard disk backup is essential.

How can I do this you may be asking.

One of my earlier posts was about backing up your WordPress blog and now, much more important, I am discussing backing up your essential files.

As I mentioned, I have an external hard drive and I use it both for freeing up space on my C:\ drive and also for back up.

However, what happens if you have a fire or something equally unpleasant at your house? Problem.

Online back up is the answer to this.

I use Carbonite and I have had good support from them. This costs me $59 a year (about 15c /day) and the backup just quietly looks after itself in the background.
If you Google “online backup” you will find others

External hard disks are becoming cheaper every day, in fact a member of my family recently bought one of 1 Terabyte (1024 gigabytes!) for around $35 although I have to say it was on offer at the time.

So, how smart am I? Not as smart as I thought! I did not keep my bookmarks backup up to date and neither did I backup my passwords (kept meaning to) so now I am slowly getting my passwords from my gmail etc as I need to find them.
Lesson learned.

I have also just looked at some software that takes an image of your hard disk but I am still a bit confused about this so more research is needed

To sum up:

Backup in as many ways as you feel you need to. For the sake of much less than $100 a year you can have peace of mind, and some extra flexibility with your computer.

You may need that back up tomorrow!
